When you are working in your line-of-business application (including web pages), you can quickly reference related documents in GlobalSearch. With Image XChange, you just select a word or phrase from any document, press a hotkey, and run a Search. You decide what to search for, which hotkeys to use, and which Search to activate.

Install Image XChange

  1. Open the Extensions Manager in your browser and click the Image XChange Install toggle switch to install the extension.

  2. Image XChange requires on OCR engine to run. Choose the Data Extraction extension to use a local OCR engine. If you have not already installed it, at the prompt that appears, click Yes.

  3. Once installed, Image XChange should automatically startup. If it does not, select Image XChange in the vertical Extensions menu. Click the More Options () icon and from there, click Start.

  4. To uninstall, click the Install toggle switch again.

Configure Image XChange Settings

Access the Image XChange Settings from your Windows system tray to configure your extension. The active Image XChange Search must be configured before the extension can run; adjusting other settings is optional.

Image XChange Tray Menu

When Image XChange is running, the Image XChange icon will appear in your Windows® system tray. This provides useful information, as well as access to the Image XChange Settings.

To access the Image XChange tray menu, start Image XChange (if it is not already running) and then right-click the Image XChange () icon in the system tray. Choose from the following options:

  • Image XChange SearchesClick to select the active Search from the list of available Image XChange Searches. When you first install Image XChange, you must set at least one Search.

  • Version – Displays the currently running version of Image XChange.

  • Settings – Click to open the Image XChange Settings, where you can configure active Searches and customize your settings.

  • Exit – Click to close the extension.

Image XChange Settings

When you install Image XChange, you must designate at least one active Image XChange Search before you can use it. You can change other settings as well, but it is not required. You do not need to restart the extension after saving changes to your settings, except for those in the Troubleshooting group. Right-click the Image XChange () icon in the system tray and choose Settings.

Save Settings

  1. Click Apply to apply settings (except for the Troubleshooting options), click OK to save settings and close the dialog, or click Set Defaults to restore to the factory default settings.

Searches

Image XChange requires a designated active Search to run; if a Search is not set, it will prompt for one at startup. Click the Searches tab to select your Search and configure how it will run using Image XChange. Your Image XChange Searches list will appear in the tray menu when you save your settings.

  1. Select a database from the Database Selection drop-down list. By default, the first available database is selected.

  2. Select the designated active Image XChange Search from the My Image XChange Searches drop-down list of available Image XChange Searches. You can assign any Search in the database that you have permissions to access to this list.

  3. To edit your list of available Image XChange Searches, click Edit. In the Select Search interface that appears, navigate to one or more Archives. Select or unselect Searches and click OK.

  4. Image XChange Searches are initiated by using a hotkey and selecting a word or area of text on your document. Choose the next step in the Search in the Search Mode group: either run the Search automatically or open a Searches dialog to allow you to edit or enter search criteria. You can even choose to go straight to the Searches dialog to input your search criteria.

    1. Select Text and Run Search Automatically – The fastest way to run an Image XChange Search is to select the prompt for the Index Field you would like your data to go into ahead of time. Enable Run Search Using Prompt to run the Search automatically when you press your hotkey and show you the search results. By default, the first prompt in the Search is selected. You can change prompts by selecting another one from the the drop-down list.

    2. Select Text, Input Search Criteria, and Run Search – Run a Search using the Searches dialog when you need more customized results. Enable Edit Search Criteria to open in Searches interface with the text captured using Image XChange in it. You can edit that indexing data and add additional search criteria from this interface.

You can change the order that the prompts appear in the Searches interface for your active Search. This does not change the Search itself, only the order that you see the prompts when you log in and run the Search. Enable Edit Search Criteria and click Set Prompt Order. In the Edit Prompt Order interface that appears, use the Up and Down (arrows) buttons to set the order in which the prompts appear and click OK.

    3. Input Search Criteria and Run Search – If you wish to open the Searches dialog without Image XChange search criteria populating a field, enable Open Search Window First.

Hotkeys

Image XChange text selection is initiated using a hotkey. The default Word Capture hotkey is Ctr+Right-click and Area Capture is Ctr+Shift+Right-click. You can customize these on the Hotkeys tab.

  1. Click the button for the hotkey you wish to modify.

  2. Enter your hotkey combination, one key at a time. Use a combination of any modifier keys (Shift, Control, Windows, Alt) and one primary key (any other key or right-click on your mouse) not already in use with a conflicting application.

Test for Hotkey Interference

Image XChange listens for hotkey input on a system-wide level. As long as Image XChange is running, it will attempt to use the hotkeys you have set. Some other applications, or the system itself, may be using the same hotkeys for their own actions. Make sure that your Image XChange hotkeys are not in conflict, as this may cause interference.

Capture Box

When you select a word or area and press the appropriate hotkey, the Capture Box appears to indicate your target text or area. The Data Extraction extension converts the words or phrases found in the Capture Box on your screen to text. You can modify its dimensions and appearance on the Capture Box tab.

  • Word Capture – If you select a word and press the Word Capture hotkey, Image XChange draws a Capture Box around where your cursor is placed.

    1. The default size for this box is 300 pixels wide by 100 pixels high. Adjust the size using the Width and Height text boxes to balance between a Capture Box large enough to capture most words, yet small enough to avoid extraneous words and keep processing times at a minimum. The Box must by at least 100 x 20 pixels. The capture area is measured from the inside edges of the box.

    2. To test the size and appearance of the Capture Box, click Preview Capture Box and drag the transparent preview Box over a document.

    3. To show the Capture Box on your document image during capture, enable Show Capture Box when drawn. It is useful to see what Image XChange is targeting during capture.

  • Area Capture When you select Area Capture hotkey, the Capture Box is displayed as the selection rectangle as you drag your selection box. Area Capture is useful when you need to capture more than one word.

  • Capture Box Appearance – You can modify the appearance of the Capture Box and view your changes in the PreviewAdjusting the appearance is useful if you are capturing from an image with a color background that is too similar to the Capture Box color, for example.
    1. To adjust the color, cick Color and in the color picker dialog that appears, select a color. The selected color appears in the Color/Solid box. Use the Basic Colors pallette, the color selector field, color slider, or enter Hex or RGB color codes when selecting. Click Add to Custom Colors to store color settings in the Custom Colors group for later use. Click OK to save your settings and close the color picker.

    2. To adjust the thickness of the line, select from the Thickness drop-down box.

    3. To adjust the line style, select from the Style drop-down box.

OCR

As with KeyFree Indexing, you can adjust the OCR Settings to get the best results when converting words or phrases on your document to text in GlobalSearch. OCR settings are usually a balance between improved capture results and improved capture speed.

  • OCR Engine Source – You can choose the OCR engine on either your local computer (using the GlobalSearch Extensions API) or the GlobalSearch server (using the Square 9 APIwhen performing OCR requests. By default, Use my computer for OCR requests is enabled, to use the Data Extraction extension on your local computer. Choose this for faster image processing and to place less of the burden on the GlobalSearch server. For it to be enabled, the Data Extraction extension must be installed and GlobalSearch Extensions must be running. If they are not, the OCR requests will use the GlobalSearch server.

  • OCR Settings – To adjust the OCR settings for optimal results, click OCR Settings and refer to Image XChange OCR Settings for details. Note that these OCR settings are local to your browser.

Startup

Startup and troubleshooting settings are found on the Startup tab.

  • Computer Startup – Enable Run Image XChange on startup to add a shortcut to Image XChange in your startup folder. This is enabled by default at installation. Unckeck this setting to remove the startup shortcut when you click Apply or Save.

  • Troubleshooting – The Troubleshooting options are off by default and should only be used when attempting to diagnose or resolve an issue with Image XChange. Unlike the other settings, these options require that you restart Image XChange before they are applied.

    1. Log Application Output – When enabled, Image XChange will log all console and exception detail information to the C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Square_9_Softworks\ImageXChange\Log\Square9.ImageXChange.log file.

    2. Show Log Location – Click to open the directory where the Image XChange log file is located.

    3. Use Verbose Logging – When enabled, Image XChange will log more process details, which could be useful for more advanced troubleshooting scenarios. Use Verbose Logging will also save each captured image to a Captures folder in the log directory. There specific images can be examined as part of the troubleshooting process.

    4. Show Developer Console – Enable this to open a console window to display detailed information about Image XChange activities. Use this option if you would like to view real-time console output instead of or in addition to using a log file.
