If Launch is enabled and you have the proper permissions, but you have not yet mapped the file type so the program knows which application to open the file in, you will see the Open in Windows menu item. When you select this, the document will launch using your Windows(r) system default application for that extension type. You can view, modify, and copy the document there but, unlike using Launch Document, the document will not be saved back to GlobalSearch. It is a good idea to stop, add the new file type to your Launch Table, return to the Document Viewer and use the Launch Document option which will then appear.

Behind the Scenes:When Launch is used, GlobalSearch sends the document’s database, Archive ID and Search ID to the GlobalSearch Extensions tray application, along with the list of Launch entries specified in the Launch Table. The tray application uses the API connector to make calls to Square 9 API to run the Search that was used to pull up the document in GlobalSearch, get the document record, retrieve the document file, and store it in the Square 9 temp directory.

The launch table is stored in the GlobalSearch_Extensions folder, in the temporary path C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Square_9_Softworks, in a file called Launch_Table.json

Any documents launched using Open in Windows will have temp files stored in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\Square9\GlobalSearch_Extensions. These files will remain in the temp directory even when the document is closed. Extensions will instead delete all the files within that directory whenever the GlobalSearch Extensions tray application is started.
